When an old friend Jack, and his partner Beck got in touch to ask us to shoot his wedding in the Eden Project – we pretty much accepted before hearing any details. The Eden Project is one of those bucket list venues – much like St Pauls in London, or shooting a Ski Wedding in the Alps, so even in the middle of a busy wedding season, the ten-hour round trip didn’t take much debate.
The Eden Project is one of the most stunning, and instantly recognisable locations in the UK. The big domes are nestled into an old rewilded quarry right in the heart of Cornwall. There’s two primary domes – the rainforest dome, which offers an incredible walk through the humid canopies of far flung south american plants – and the Mediterranian dome, which offers a calmer, brighter atmosphere that’s absolutely perfect for ceremonies.
Beck got ready just outside of Newquay, in the Watergate Hotel – which had views overlooking the nearby surf scene, as well as some local art and photography on the wall that made for one of our favourite ‘preparation’ shots of all time.
Jack and the boys arrived early to the domes for a final check, and a few pictures, while Beck took a leisurely ride over in an old converted VW camper, arriving in perfect time for final staging, and for the flowers to be handed over. A small planning note if you’re considering your own Eden Project wedding: because the Biomes are protected habitats, there are restrictions around what can be brought in and how things are supplied – worth building into your planning early. (Your coordinator and suppliers will thank you.)
Wedding ceremonies in the Mediterranean Biome at the Eden Project
If you want the feeling of an outdoor ceremony – without gambling on British weather – the Mediterranean Biome is hard to beat. Eden describes it as recreating the “sights and smells” of the Med, with bright blooms and fragrant herbs and citrus trees, giving you that destination-wedding atmosphere while staying in Cornwall.
It also photographs beautifully for a ceremony: clean lines overhead, soft light, and a natural warmth that makes everything feel relaxed. And if you’re planning to keep celebrations going into the evening, after-dark receptions can take place in the Mediterranean Biome too, with low path lighting reflecting on the arched ceiling for a mindblowing ‘starry’ effect. On that note – keep scrolling until you hit those images at the end – nighttime in the rafters, shooting down into the dinner, party, and some intimate moments with Jack and Beck are memories that I will carry for a long, long time.
I could tell you a million stories about every aspect of the day, but we like to tell stories with pictures here – so I alwyas think it’s best to just have a scroll through and get a feel that way.
