Baslow Edge Couples Shoot – The Quieter Alternative You Probably Haven’t Heard Of

Most people who come to Curbar Edge walk the obvious section, take the obvious photos, and leave. Very few of them know that Baslow Edge is right there – barely ten minutes further along the same stretch of high ground – with the same sweeping views over the Derwent Valley and noticeably fewer people on it.

Baslow is my go-to recommendation for couples who want the Curbar experience without the Curbar footfall. The panoramas are comparable, the gritstone character is the same, and the light works in exactly the same way at the same time of day.

It’s just a bit quieter!

The Eagle Stone

About a quarter of a mile from the main edge path, slightly inland, there’s a freestanding boulder called the Eagle Stone. It’s a gritstone tor that rises out of the heather with a distinctly different look from the edge itself – more sculptural, more isolated, and excellent for portraits. Historically it was a test piece for young men of Baslow village before they could marry (they had to climb it – I’m not recommending this for your shoot). It’s a useful secondary backdrop that gives the session a bit more variety.

Practical Notes

Getting there: You can park at Curbar Gap and walk south along the edge to reach Baslow, or park closer in Baslow village and approach from below. The edge itself is easily reached on foot from several points.

Best time to visit: Same logic as Curbar – sunset is the money shot. But because Baslow is quieter, you have more flexibility. Early morning works beautifully here too.

In combination with Curbar: Some sessions work well moving between both edges – starting at Baslow for something quieter and more relaxed, then moving toward Curbar as the light drops and things get golden. I’ll usually suggest this if you’re up for a slightly longer session.
