Lucy and Dalton are two of those people who light up a room without even trying - always laughing, always full of joy. And those singing voices!!! We first met them at a wedding in Antigua, and they always knew they wanted us to shoot for them one day - we are very glad they did.
It rained. Properly, dramatically, tropically rained - the kind of downpour that makes you briefly question everything. And then, as though on cue, it stopped. The sky cleared, the stone dried in the sun, and Lucy and Dalton's wedding at Pattoo Castle became exactly what it was always going to be: one of the most joyful days we have ever photographed.
Pattoo Castle sits on the cliffs above the sea in Negril - a venue so cool that it barely needs a wedding in it to be worth photographing. The castle rises directly from the clifftop, the Caribbean Sea spreading out below it, and the walkway that leads up to the entrance is one of those spaces that immediately tells you - you're in for a treat. When the sun is out and the light is coming in off the water, it's pretty hard to beat.
Lucy and Dalton had filled it with family and friends who were - in the truest sense - their people. The energy at Pattoo was warm, relaxed, and importantly - fun. The rain poured, everyone huddled, laughed, and then headed back out into the sunshire to dry off their chairs.
The ceremony was held on the walkway leading up to the castle. Lucy came down it the way Lucy does most things: bouncing with energy. Lucy looked beautiful in her Justin Alexander gown with her dad beside her. Dalton waiting in a soft pink-hued suit. It set the tone for an entire day - joyful, unself-conscious, completely them. They handfasted - or tried to, at least. They rushed it a little, which was, on reflection, entirely on brand for them, I think the resultant knot has been framed somewhere at home.
By the golden hour, we were on top of the castle, the sea spreading out below, the light doing everything it needed to. Those couple portraits at Pattoo in that late afternoon light are pretty indelibly marked on my memory - the castle, the cliffs, the water, the sky all working together in harmony. We have photographed in a lot of extraordinary places - this is pretty near the top.
The party that followed had that incredible energy that happens when everyone in the room really loves each other. Close friends and family who had travelled from all over the world to be in the same place at the same time, and who made the most of every moment.
